One sip of the Crossfit Kool-Aid and Theo Dehoyos was hooked!

Theo Dehoyos, Image by Primo Chalk

We got the chance to chat with our athlete Theo about his life in and out of the gym, it was great to learn more about his background, training, and where he got the drive to embrace the suck of Crossfit!

What does being a Primo ambassador mean to you?

Being a Primo Ambassador means representing a brand that cares about the people that use their product. It means being proud to support a hardworking company like Primo Chalk because I’m a hardworking person myself. (Additionally I’m a native Texan, Dallas, so I’m happy to represent a Texas company)

How long have you been Crossfitting?

I started doing functional fitness training first in 2010 and then found CrossFit in 2011, so about 5 years now.

What got you into the sport?

After a deployment to Afghanistan a fellow Soldier was already doing CrossFit and functional fitness workouts and he invited me to join him. After some initial doubt I eventually drank the Kool-Aid and got hooked.

Walk me through a day in the life of Theo.

I wake up early and head to my local CrossFit gym, CrossFit Homestead, and either do the class WOD or my own training. I am a CrossFit Level 2 trainer and USAW Lv1 coach. I program for myself and for others through my own training program called Devast8 Training which can be found on the app Wodfollow. After training I head to work at Homestead Air Base where I am an Operations Sergeant for Special Operations Command South. And then I look forward to seeing my family after work.

In your bio you mention having been in the Army for 17 years, what inspired you to join?
I was a Paramedic before I enlisted and wanted a change in my career. I thought that there was no better way to serve our nation and it’s people than to serve in our Armed Forces, and I’ve always wanted to serve. It was a privilege to get the opportunity to enlist in the Army.

What is the most interesting place you have been stationed? Why did you like it so much?

My first duty station I was stationed in South Korea for two years in the 2nd Infantry Division close to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). I learned very quickly the importance of discipline due to the nature of the mission (North Korea was only a stone’s throw away) and some great leadership. Winters were harsh and the mountainous landscape of Korea made the tour of duty challenging and memorable (think embrace the suck!). That tour helped shape the kind of Soldier and leader I am today and I’m very proud to have been there. Additionally, South Korea is full of beautiful mountains and rugged terrain.

What are your other passions besides Crossfit?

Family first, all things Army, and training my fellow Soldiers in functional fitness.

Thank you for taking the time for this interview Theo! So happy to have you on the team 🙂

What does your involvement in your sport mean to you? Why did you fall in love with it?

My involvement in the Crossfit community means to me. It is hard to sum up in words. Well that is hard but I will try . Family is the best word to describe it. I have been involved in the Crossfit community since 2012. All I can say is every Box I have went to welcomes me with open arms. From California to Georgia. We share a common ground and that is a passion and love for fitness. That is why I do Crossfit cause the community and they way they are able to welcome anyone with open arms. A lot of people do it cause they want to be famous. I do it cause I love helping people. Nothing better than coaching your athlete and they get a PR. It is the most rewarding feeling.

Out of all the product sponsorships out there, why is Primo the one for you?

As a coach I feel responsible to promote a brand you believe in. Primo Chalk is the best Chalk on the market for an amazing price. The Chalk smells amazing. It is very fine . Which means it absorbs well.  I will only promote a product I believe in. Besides it’s like fairy dust … Put some on my hands and boom a PR..

What is a surprising fact about yourself we wouldn’t expect to hear?

A surprising fact about me. I love to sew and make Cosplay costumes. Right now I am working on a steampunk costume.

Anything else we should know?

Being the daughter of a Martial Artist and growing up in the Bronx, my childhood was far from average. My sisters and I spent our weekends going to the Tia chi farm in Warwick New York watching our father teach combat Tai Chi to hundreds of students and working with his master Jou Tsoung Hwa. Other weekends we would travel to Martial Arts tournaments where my father would judge, compete and perform exhibition Martial Arts while we watched from the sidelines. Our real education took place in our basement where my dad had a dojo complete with weight room. We were real, live karate kids.

What does your involvement in your sport mean to you? Why did you fall in love with it?

My involvement in crossfit means basically everything to me. Everything that I do, I keep my goal in mind. Whether it’s saying no to friends going out, eating unhealthy when it’s not a cheat meal, or doing anything that may cut even a second off of the time it takes to reach my goals. I pour everything that I am into training. I don’t aim to just be a really great crossfitter, I want be exceptional. Exceptional people with goals that seem unrealistic don’t let things slide. This isn’t all to say I’m all work and no play, but my idea of play is doing things that benefit me in some part of life. Like messing around with others at the gym, going on hikes, exploring, being with my family, hanging out with the youth group kids, being with friends, or playing with my dog! I biggest aim is to live a healthy life and reach my goals while doing so. My commitment to crossfit shows that I really don’t have balance, but I don’t think many people have exactly mastered that regardless of what they say. Crossfit and my goals are very important to me. Very few things take priority over it but those things are my family, God, and school. I love life this way. I wouldn’t have it any way else.

Out of all the product sponsorships out there, why is Primo the one for you?

This is a good question. What it comes down to is what you offer and how you offer it. Yes, the company sells chalk but the difference is the quality you put into the product and the way that you treat it. This company takes what could be seen as a single thing and you make it into something bigger by the way that you advertise, the way you talk about it, etc. There is a clear interest and passion in the one product that you revolve yourself around. I admire passion and I appreciate the fact that you don’t try to sell  a ton of different things to try and make money. You just keep building on this one thing. So if you treat the products that way, then I know you’ll treat your athletes as if we are your product. You produce quality over quantity and that is a growing market.

What is a surprising fact about yourself that we wouldn’t expect to hear?

One thing that you would never know is that to be where I am today, I went through a lot of hardship. I was like a puck on a plinko board and just happened to land in a winning spot. I went through two ACL reconstructions on the same knee that ended my competitive cheerleading career, chances of playing sports in college, and forced me to sit in the most important time of life where I could’ve been developed athletically. I had to sit during my teams cheerleading worlds competition that I trained all year for and I never saw the court again for my Junior Olympic all-American volleyball team as well as my school volleyball team. The second year happened ten days after I was cleared from my first one and I knew it was over. I lost friends, developed an eating disorder, got into an abusive relationship, started drinking, and began working out through frustration.  Through all of these hardships, I found myself. I found out what was important. I started realizing how badly all of these things were hurting me and started to remove them one by one. One day I saw the 2015 games recap and I knew that’s where I wanted to be. I googled the nearest crossfit gym and I went straight there. I fell in love and I found a new hope. So under all of this muscle, there is a person. Everyone thinks I just workout and wish they had the motivation to do what I do. If they only knew what it took and how many years it took to get this motivation, they would want any of it.

What does your involvement in your sport mean to you? Why did you fall in love with it?

What got me interested in the sport of Crossfit was my friend Mark Sainci, at the time we were training MMA together and he was doing Crossfit for staying in shape, he asked me and another teammate to come try it and boy we got our butts kicked.  I thought we were in shape because we would go to one of the local gym and workout everyday but Crossfit was a whole another level, it definitely made you get out of your comfort zone.  That first workout was 3 years ago and today I am still gaining strength and I am in better shape then I was in high school.  I am a better athlete and better then I was in high school.  The reason I fell in Love with Crossfit is they don’t focus on one thing, this sport tests all aspects of fitness, speed, agility, stamina, strength, nutrition, gymnastics, it makes you become a true well rounded athlete, and it seems as you get older you get stronger, people would always say that as you get old you get weaker, but I am stronger and have better knowledge about being fit then I did in high school and I am 24 now.  Another reason I love this sport because the community that comes with it, it is not just another gym, you gain a family, a family that will help you push through the workout, a family that will reach out and help you in a time of need.  I love Crossfit Chiron and the people that come with the gym.  Crossfit pushes you to try to harder and become a better person.  That is why I love this sport.

Out of all the product sponsorships out there, why is Primo the one for you?

A reason I wanted to become apart of the Primo chalk community is because you guys truly care about the athletes that represent your product.  Plus what you guys advertise is what you get, you guys have a great product.  Your chalk does what you guys have made it to do, I have yet to rip using the Primo Chalk, feels great, doesn’t dry your hands out, it helps me crush PR wether it is in weightlifting  or gymnastics. we use it everyday at Crossfit Chiron, people love it.  Again you guys are more then just a company, you are involved with the local community and the athletes, you support us and believe in us. Primo Chalk is a great and positive company, and truly care about their product.

What is a surprising fact about yourself that we wouldn’t expect to hear?

One thing you might know about me, I also love running, running was my first sport, but a goal for me and I will accomplish is to run in the Boston r Marathon, people think to be a great runner, you can’t have a lot of muscle, I am trying to break that image.  Everyday I am just trying to help others, and show them that with hard work, dedication, faith and positivity you can accomplish your goals and dreams.  Always believe, push yourself each and everyday.  Enjoy the process, enjoy the journey, enjoy the people around you along this journey and smile, even during the suck smile and be happy at what you do. Dream big, work hard for what you want.

I don’t have a crazy athletic background but I grew up playing basketball from grade school to high school. After graduating I hung out with the wrong crowds and wanted to be part of something bigger. I was introduced to crossfit and immediately felt the attraction.

Crossfit made me more confident in myself than I have ever been and made me more disciplined not just inside he gym but outside as well. My commitment and discipline and motivation poured out over the gym and spilled into my work life and personal life. The community and the push this sport brings is unreal and everyday my body surprises me by what it is capable of doing.

I compete not for others, but to show myself that there is no limit your own mind and body can place on yourself.
